I will admit the first time I heard about a BB Cushion I thought the concept was unnecessary and well rather gimmicky. A BB Cushion is exactly what it sounds like, a cushion encased in a compact soaked in BB Cream. With hesitation and lack of intrigue, what unknowingly became one of my all time favorite foundations simply sat amongst my makeup.
BB Cushions originated from Korea and have since spread like wild fire with mainstream brands such as It Cosmetics and Lancome following suite. Laneige, a Korean brand belongs to the parent company AMOREPACIFIC.
The Laneige BB Cushion is available at Target and retails for $34.00. Each box contains a re-usable compact, two BB Cushions and a tailor-made sponge. The packaging is both travel friendly and practical. The large mirror allows you to get ready or touch up on-the-go while also providing a place to store your sponge. I really liked that the cushion has a cover – so you are able to use the mirror without fearing that the product will dry up. Unlike other foundations, the Laneige BB Cushion is everything you need in a sleek white compact.
When removing the product from the packaging you will find the additional BB Cushion in a sealed package. Rest assured your spare BB Cushion won’t dry out by the time you need it.
Now let’s talk about the magic. The Laneige compact has a patented BB Cushion in combination with a tailored made sponge to provide a thin even application. The sponge is designed not to absorb product but transfer product similar to a stamp. The Cushion’s several pores provide a thinly veiled amount to transfer; resulting in a sprayed-on finish. This “pressing” application process does take practice. Reading several online reviews of patchy and blotchy applications, I can see the user error is common. If you do find difficulty in correctly applying this product I recommend using a flat kabuki brush, such as the Sigma F80 for a flawless finish.
Once your BB cushion is finished, installing the refill is both easy and hassle free. Simply push the bottom of the compact and the Cushion is easily released.
Overall, I was highly impressed with the versatility of this product. At first I began using this foundation over the summer on the sole basis that is had an SPF 50 UVA/UVB. During the LA heatwave, it did a wonderful job withstanding the hot, humid days without breaking down with my sweat. The technology behind the Laneige BB Cushion is pretty impressive, as it’s lightweight consistency provides medium-light coverage, moisturizes and improve the skin’s texture. I would say the Laneige BB Cushion dries with a powder – finish and does a good job blending with other powder – face products. As a disclaimer, I must share this does have a perfume scent and may be too strong from those with a sensitive nose.
So what do you think? Here is a photo with me using the Laneige BB Cushion and a full face of makeup.
